Hyundai has placed longtime best-sellers Honda Accord and Toyota Camry directly in its sites with the all-new Sonata. The Sonata meets or exceeds those models in most respects. With new EPA fuel economy ratings of up to 24 mpg city, 35 highway, thanks to a new direct-injection 4-cylinder engine, the Sonata has fuel-efficiency and power figures that are both better than most base-model mid-size sedans. The 2011 Sonata is now classified by the EPA as a large car, and has more passenger room than most of its competitors, while it has significantly more trunk space than the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu. The Sonata also wins the category in safety, as it's already been named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. Warranty continues to be a strong selling point for all Hyundais as well. The Sonata includes a 5-year/60,000-mile fully transferable bumper-to-bumper warranty, 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and five years of roadside assistance. The new Sonata lineup is 4-cylinder-only for 2011.This year power comes from an all-new 198-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission option. Buyers who want a manual transmission, it's only available on the base-model GLS. Fuel economy is stellar with either transmission. The manual-transmission model gets an EPA-rated 24 mpg city, 35 highway while the automatic models are capable of 22 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. Hyundai credits the engine's direct-injection design as well as improved aerodynamics and an overall curb weight that's lighter than most other mid-size sedans. The 6-speed automatic transmission is also an all-new unit offering a wide span of gear ratios for good performance as well as fuel economy. The new 2011 Hyundai Sonata has a rather conventional suspension layout, with MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link, independent arrangement in back, along with front and rear stabilizer bars to help bring sporty handling along with a good, well damped ride. All Sonatas are front-wheel drive. GLS and Limited models get low-rolling-resistance tires aimed at improving fuel economy, while the SE gets stickier low-profile tires and a firmer suspension tuning. Appearance-wise, the Sonata is completely new from every angle, inside and out, with a more flowing, curvaceous design throughout (Hyundai calls it Fluidic Sculpture). The new waterfall grill design dips low in front, and a prominent body-side crease flows upward into the rear lights. The interior design "wraps around" the front occupants and flows through to the back, bringing climate-control vents, while the instrument panel itself follows a new, straightforward control layout that puts entertainment and navigation controls up high with large climate controls just below. Front and backseat appointments are plenty spacious for five adults-including enough space for taller adults in back. In addition to the base GLS, two other Sonata automatic-only models of the Sonata are offered: the sporty SE and the especially luxurious Limited. The three models of the Sonata also get quite different interior appointments; lower-level Sonata models get a textured plastic material for the dash and doors, while SE models get more metallic trim and Limited models get woodgrain or piano-black trims. SE models add steering-wheel paddle-shifters and Limited models get a sport-shift mode for the transmission. GLS models get a very generous array of standard equipment, including keyless entry, cruise control, air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering wheel adjustment, steering-wheel controls, power windows, locks, and mirrors and split folding rear seatbacks. SE models add sport seats, leather steering-wheel and shifter trim, and push button start, plus fog lamps, "hyper silver alloy" wheels, performance tires, and a chrome-tipped exhaust. At the top of the range, the Limited gets a long list of additional features, such as a sunroof, heated leather seats (front and back), heated mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control and rear-seat heat ducts. All Sonata models get a USB stereo interface as well as an iPod connector, plus XM satellite radio and a Bluetooth hands-free calling interface. A new wide-screen navigation system is optional on the SE and Limited, featuring real-time XM NavTraffic along with weather, stock and sports information. Bluetooth audio streaming capability and 8 gigabytes of flash memory for storing music files are included with the stereo as well. Safety features are strong in the 2011 Sonata. All models get active head restraints for front occupants and include front side airbags, full-length side-curtain bags, electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes. Hyundai's mid-size Sonata sedan has been completely redesigned for 2011. The new model bears very little resemblance to the previous model and is quite a bit larger, though it hasn't become any heavier. It's also much more fuel-efficient and has a more powerful base engine while doing away with the V6 option. Safety has been improved, as has the Sonata's standard-feature list, while a new-generation entertainment and navigation systems bring Hyundai's mid-size sedan up to the front of the pack for technophiles on a budget. The popular Lincoln MKZ enters 2010 with plenty to like. The car is powered by a 263-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, which is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. The MKZ comes as either front-wheel or all-wheel drive with an EPA rating of 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway.

The nimble chassis employs a fully independent suspension with a multi-link rear and double wishbones up front. Four-wheel disc brakes provide the stopping power. For cars so equipped, in the event of a loss of grip, the MKZ's intelligent all-wheel drive system quickly and seamlessly delivers the right amount of power to the wheels with the most traction to enhance grip.

The MKZ comes loaded with standard features including power heated and cooled leather front seats with memory, a rear parking aid, steering wheel audio and cruise controls, heated mirrors, SYNC voice-activated communications and entertainment system and dual-zone climate control. Popular options include adaptive HID headlights, THX audio system, rain sensing wipers, a back-up camera, a moonroof, a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and remote start.

A Sport Appearance Package adds a sport-tuned suspension, aluminum interior trim, special floor mats and 18-inch alloy wheels. An optional Navigation Package includes voice-activated navigation, while an in-dash DVD/CD/MP3 player, an internal hard disk, a 10GB music jukebox, a rear view camera and BLIS.

Available safety features include four-wheel anti-lock brakes, traction control, anti-skid system, curtain side airbags and front side airbags.

The Lincoln MKZ is redesigned for 2010, with a bold look to carry the midsize sedan forward. This includes revised front and rear ends and a more aggressive grille. The interior has been made more contemporary as well, with ample use of wood and leather, and the instruments have been restyled.

A new 6-speed automatic with SelectShift manual mode allows for a sportier drive and improves the MKZ's overall performance. Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) is now available.

The BMW 7-Series is known as the vehicle for CEOs and captains of industry. The 7-Series is immensely comfortable inside and has all the traditional luxury that buyers in this price class will expect; but it also emphasizes technology, with extras like a heads-up display, blind-spot detection and active seats. The 750i and 750Li are virtually the same car but the 750Li has a few inches of extra length. The 750Li is the choice for those who might carry backseat passengers (or might be the backseat passenger) and don't have to worry about parking space. Both come powered by a 400-horsepower, 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission. The 7-Series uses a new system called Driving Dynamics Control, which interfaces with the air suspension and helps adjust to find the best compromise at any moment between suspension firmness and ride comfort. The system takes into consideration steering response, transmission shifts and engine power. Newly available this year on the 750 models is xDrive all-wheel drive. Using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, the xDrive system adjusts torque toward the wheels with the best traction and also interfaces with the steering and stability control. During normal driving, 60 percent of engine power is sent to the rear wheels. The new 760Li model-only offered in the extended length-will feature a 537-horsepower, 6.0-liter V12 engine and 8-speed automatic, delivering power to the rear wheels. The 760Li should be able to accelerate to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds. And as in past V12 models, the 760Li will deliver authoritative performance with only the most muted, refined growl from the exhaust. A new ActiveHybrid 7 model, slated to go on sale late in the 2010 model year, pairs a 455-horsepower, twin-turbo V8 gasoline engine with an electric motor system. Power is delivered through an 8-speed automatic transmission, and a lithium-ion battery, mounted under the trunk floor, stores energy to be used by the motor. Overall, BMW anticipates 0-60 mph acceleration of 4.8 seconds and a 15-percent improvement in fuel economy versus the 750i, and the hybrid model maintains a 50/50 weight distribution so it should still handle well. With the new M Sport Performance Package offered for 2010, the 7-Series can be given a sportier personality. Available with either the 750 or 760 models, it includes active roll stabilization for flatter cornering, plus a sport steering wheel, aerodynamic kit, and special trim and color schemes. Safety features include front side airbags, rear head-protecting side bags, side-curtain bags, knee bags and active head restraints. Among the useful and outrageous tech features are a head-up display, side-view cameras, and a blind-spot detection system, while comfort goodies include ventilated active seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. A BMW Individual Composition customization program helps buyers order special trims and color combinations to suit their tastes. The BMW 7-Series was completely redesigned for the 2009 model year, with just a single powertrain in 750i and extended 750Li models. For 2010, the full-size luxury sedan gets an expanded model lineup with a new M Sport Package, optional xDrive all-wheel drive, and a new twin-turbo V-12-powered 760Li.
